Biography
Noel is a graduate student in German and Aerospace Engineering. She is originally from Lake Zurich, IL, and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. She has been at Illinois since 2015 and earned her B.A. in Germanic Studies from the department in 2019. She also has a BS (2019) and MS (2021) in Aerospace.
Research Interests
Noel’s Ph.D. research is interdisciplinary, centering on a field called “explainable artificial intelligence”. Explainable AI aims to create human-comprehensible explanations for an AI’s decisions. In this vein, Noel is combining her background in Aerospace controls and dynamical systems with aspects of pragmatics and translation theory to develop more human-friendly explanations. On the Germanic side, Noel is particularly interested in the history of the Germanic languages, both linguistically and in literature, which has led to a focus on medieval and early modern works.
