Each year several Program participants have internships in Austria or Germany, either during the year or in the summer following the Program. Internships provide additional opportunities for improving German language skills. Sometimes internships lead to longer employment. Companies which recently hosted Program interns were:

Undergraduate and Graduate:

1. AIDS Hilfe

What: In support of the departments within the Division of Prevention Aids Hilfe
Wien we are looking for motivated and reliable students of social science, educational, medical or similar fields of study (college or university) for long-term placements.

Time: 3 months

2. U.S. Commercial Service Austria

What: The U.S. Commercial Service assists U.S. companies entering the Austrian market and helps Austrian firms in their efforts to profit from their alliances with American companies either by representing American manufactures, utilizing American products, or through joint venture arrangements. To support these objectives, the office analyzes information on the Austrian market, facilitates contacts with German businesses, promotes US products in the Austrian marketplace, and advocates US business interests. Requires fluency in German and English.

Time: 3 months

3.  U.S Department of State Student Internship Program

What: At the U.S. Department of State, we like to say that we represent America to the world. As an intern here or abroad, you will, too. The U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program is an unpaid internship with the opportunity to work in U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the world, as well as in various bureaus located in Washington, D.C. and at Department offices around the United States. This program is designed to provide substantive learning experiences in a foreign affairs environment.

Time: At least 3 months

4.  IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)

What: The purpose of the program is to provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical experiences in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the Agency and the United Nations as a whole, as well as to benefit the Agency’s programs through the assistance of qualified students specials in various professional fields.

Time: 3 months – 1 year

5.  The OPEC Fund for International Development

What: In line with the vision statement, which is “to aspire to a world where Sustainable Development, centered on human capacity-building, is a reality for all”, OFID provides the opportunity of an internship Program for students from diverse academic backgrounds to build their capacity by enriching their educational experience through practical day-to-day work in an International Organization.

Time: 3 months

6. Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries

What: The purpose of OPEC’s Internship Program is to offer on-the-job practical training to recent university graduates and students enrolled in the final year of a university program.

7. The UN Refugee Agency

What: The UNHCR Office in Austria offers internships in its Legal Unit and its Public Information Unit. Moreover, the UNHCR Liaison Office to the OSCE and Vienna-based UN Agencies also offers internships.

8. United Nations Commission on International Trade Law

What: The International Trade Law Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (ITLD), which serves as the substantive secretariat of UNCITRAL, offers an internship program for a selected number of applicants whose major is commercial law, international trade law or private international law.

9. Samariterbund

What: Whether in the care, emergency service in the refugee and homeless assistance, disaster relief or organizational tasks and event management – without the Austria-wide 7,200 volunteer helpers’ work of non-profit organizations would be unthinkable. The Samaritan is currently looking for voluntary staff in the areas of visiting service, activities for children and information activities at events.

Graduate:

1. Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe

What: The OSCE Internship Programme provides a framework for graduate/postgraduate students or recent graduates or postgraduates (within one year of graduation) to develop their professional skills and gain practical work experience in an international environment. The aim of the programme is to expose interns to the work of the OSCE and to provide OSCE departments with qualified and specialized assistance in various professional fields. A great opportunity for recent grads/alumni of the AIEP program.

Time: 2- 6 months

2. The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)

What: The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) accept unpaid interns on an ad hoc basis. The purpose of our Programme is to offer students from diverse academic backgrounds an educational experience through practical work assignments within the international environment of the UN while offering the United Nations the assistance of qualified students specializing in various professional fields.

Time:  2-6 months

3.  International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)

What: Since 1977, IIASA’s annual 3-month Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers research opportunities to talented young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA’s ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change.

Time:  3 months

4.  United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

What: The UNIDO Internship Program has been established for students from diverse academic backgrounds. Its purpose is to promote a better understanding of the Organization's goals and objectives and, at the same time, to afford interns with an insight on how attempts are made to solve problems confronting developing economies in the area of industrialization.

Time: 3-9 months

5.  Wolf Theiss

What: Our internship program is all about putting the theory into practice. Over the course of four weeks, you will work as an active member of the team in big international cases- even accompanying us to client meetings and negotiations.

Time: Four weeks

Émigré Memorial German Internship

What:

The Émigré Memorial German Internship Program–German State Parliaments (EMGIP) is a fellowship program that provides U.S. and Canadian students with internships at a German state parliament (Landtag).

Time: 1-3 Months

Graduate:

US Teaching Assistantships

What: Live and teach in Austria!  For decades this program has provided college graduates from the United States with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to work as secondary school teaching assistants in communities all over Austria. In addition to serving as valuable linguistic models in classroom English instruction, US teaching assistants are also valuable resources for first-hand information about the "American way of life" and informal representatives of the United States.
