Biography

Kyle Schmude began his career in the instruction of German language courses with an internship at the Goethe-Institut of Chicago, which led him to re-locate to Vienna, where he taught German to refugees and students registered with the Austrian Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice (AMS) Österreich). While at AMS, Kyle taught German language courses from alphabetization through the B2 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Kyle also holds certifications from the Austrian (ÖIF and ÖSD) and German (BAMF) governments to assess language examinations used primarily for citizenship acquisition.

Kyle's engagement with the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures began in 2018 as a lecturer of the Illinois in Vienna Programs, where he taught German courses to Illinois students studying abroad in Vienna. While in Vienna, Kyle regularly taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced German language courses, which encouraged students to interact with the city of Vienna. Kyle also developed a specialized, online section of introductory German tailored to students interested in studying abroad with a focus on Vienna.

Currently, Kyle teaches GER 320: German for Business and GER 321: German for Economics in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. He is also the Assistant Director of LAS International Programs, where he oversees education abroad advising, program management, and incoming exchange programs for the College of LAS.
